Welcome
You have stopped by the Buchanan County Treasurer’s webpage giving you service 24/7. You can make payments for property taxes and motor vehicle registrations. Payment on the web allows use of Discover, MasterCard, Visa and e-Check is acceptable. A $30.00 returned check fee would be assessed on any payments returned due to insufficient funds.

We hope that you can visit Buchanan County and enjoy some of the historic sites. The county seat is Independence, “America’s Fame is in our Name”.

We are the home of the Great Horse Racing Era. The many sites include: Wapsie Pinicon Mill, sitting five stories high on the dam of the Wapsie Pinicon River. This mill was put together with wooden pegs.

The refurbished Independence Train Depot is also located here. This was elevated and moved two blocks away next to Hwy 150 an inch at a time. An engine and a caboose are also on the property. The Tourism Committee is now housed there.

A home that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, which also sits on the riverside, is now a tourist attraction. Many other historic homes are still in the area today.

In recent times an Agri-Business Center has been erected on a site on the edge of town. This area also includes a One Room Schoolhouse, theater, hotel and “The Homestead” a restaurant that features home made dishes. You may be seated in a rocker on the porch that overlooks a pond after your meal.

The staff of Buchanan County Treasurer’s office is here to assist in any questions you may have and we look for to welcoming you so that you will feel you are home.
